Natural Clock Watchers

This week, we will start a phenology calendar to track the natural events that occur around us as the seasons go by. Merriam-Webster defines phenology as a branch of science dealing with the relations between climate and periodic biological phenomena (as bird migration or plant flowering). In other words, we will set our proverbial watches to the changes in nature around us!

Our location near a wildlife refuge is ideal for making observations to keep track of these regular natural events. All year, we will be watching for "first" occurrences. Here's part of our list!

  • bird migration

  • first nest built

  • pond thaw

  • when the deer flies appear

  • call of the first frog

  • bumble bee activity

  • first bud

  • first blossom

  • first birds to hatch

  • apple fruit formed

The list is endless and each month will bring new observations and discoveries. What a great project for elementary age students to participate in. Recently, we printed off a blank calendar and all that we need to do is write in our observation on the date whenever we see something new! Easy! Fun! Join us and leave us comments on what happens in your part of the country!
